Political Paradigms in Action – Social Dynamics of Citizenship in Latin America & the Caribbean is a new Spring 2014 graduate seminar taught by Professor Edgardo Pérez Morales.
Open to students of any discipline, this seminar will critically approach three paradigms that have shaped the construction of the nation-state and the emergence of citizenships in Latin America and the Caribbean: the Enlightenment, Emancipation and Multiculturalism.
- How is citizenship intertwined with the issues of governance, race, and representation?
- How do the practices of citizenship change over time?
- Do academic representations of Latin America and the Caribbean shape these changes?
Students will study the social processes behind these paradigms, highlighting the role, challenges, and contradictions of collective action, and the interplay between political discourse and everyday life experiences. This seminar will examine citizenship not merely as a political category but as a dynamic social process of political belonging. Students will read explore a bibliography of different but interconnected places such as Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, and even the Caribbean-influenced New Orleans and New York.
